The rainfall in August and September was still likely to be in the normal range, between 94 and 106 per cent of long period average, but “on the negative side of the normal”, the IMD said.
Extreme rainfall events are not surprising, nor are they uncommon. In fact, after the 2013 Uttarakhand disaster, there hasn’t been a single year without at least one major extreme rainfall event.
Several state governments, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Delhi-NCR, have declared the closure of schools and colleges due to heavy rainfall alerts issued by the IMD. The IMD has also issued a flash flood alert for coastal regions of Karnataka.
