Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Monday informed that 55% of the black fungus, or, Mucormycosis patients had diabetes. In a meeting with 27th Group of Ministers, the health minister highlighted data on black fungus havoc in the country, he said, 5,424 cases of Mucormycosis reported in 18 States/UTs. Out of 5,424 cases, 4,556 patients have history of Covid-19 infection. 55% of the patients had diabetes .
Black fungus or mucormycosis is caused by exposure to mucor mould which is commonly found in soil, plants, manure, and decaying fruits and vegetables.

Amidst a rise in coronavirus cases in India, there have been several cases linked to the black fungus infection, or mucomycortisis, which is known to have an extremely high fatality rate. Several confirmed cases have been reported across states, which many believe to be the newest endemic on the rise.
However, even though black fungus fueled post-COVID complications continue to loom, there s a new found threat which is baffling medical experts. According to reports, cases linked to white fungus infection have been traced in Bihar, which health experts believe to be even scarier than the black fungus threat.
Identify Black Fungus As Epidemic: Centre To States May 20, 2021, 15:38 IST
New Delhi: Centre asked all the states to declare mucormycosis or black fungus as an epidemic. The Union Health Ministry sent a letter to the states and asked them to identify the mucormycosis disease under the Epidemic Diseases Act .
According to the report, any case of Black fungus has to be reported to the health ministry. Confirmed or under testing, all the cases should go to the ministry.
Health Ministry Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal in the letter wrote that “All government and private health facilities and medical colleges have to follow guidelines for screening, diagnosis, management of mucormycosis.”
