After being summoned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for questioning on January 17 in a case related to Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), actor Deep Sidhu has alleged that the probe agency has called people for questioning on the direction of the central government.

CHANDIGARH/NEW DELHI: After the raids by the I-T department on commission agents in Punjab for supporting the farmers’ protest, the National Investigation Agency has served notices to at least 12 activists who have supported the stir, including Baldev Singh Sirsa, the president of the Lok Bhalai Insaf Welfare Society.
Sirsa was summoned for questioning on January 17, two days before the tenth round of talks. The anti-terror agency claimed Sirsa had been called as a witness in connection with a terror funding case registered against the Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), a banned Khalistani outfit. “A notice has been sent under Sect ion 160 CrPC, which is done for witness summons,” an NIA official said.

JALANDHAR: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sent notices to at least a dozen more people including Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu’s brother and other Sikh activists associated with the farmers protest. The WhatsApp notices received on Friday by them pertain to a case registered by the agency at Delhi on December 15, 2020, under the provisions of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), sedition, criminal conspiracy and other charges against Sikhs for Justice (a banned outfit) legal adviser Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and his associates.
The issue of NIA notices sent to four persons prior to this had figured in the meeting between central agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar and farmers unions’ leaders on Friday during the 9th round of talks with the government. Prior to this, a Ludhiana-based bus operator, a nut bolt manufacturer and a cable operator had been sent such notices.

Anti-terror federal probe agency NIA has sent notices to over a dozen farm leaders, Sikh activists and journalists from Punjab, who are associated with the protest against Centre’s three farm laws, to appear before it as witnesses in a case pertaining to Sikhs for Justice (a banned outfit) legal adviser Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and his other associates.
The move, among the protesting farmers, is seen as an attempt by the government to derail the agitation by intimidation.
The farmer representatives, who held the ninth round of negotiations with the government on Friday, took strong exception and registered their objections to the notices being sent.
