bring ryan riley, i want to thank him as well, and everyone who was here tonight. i want to throw to another big gun, chris hayes. i toss it to you, my friend. this is one of the biggest nights i think for any of us who are in this business. it is a night of pathos not joy in the sense that the american republic is having to witness this integration of the presidency or the former presidency in the form of the apparently now confirmed indictment of donald trump. now c there is something so different about the manhattan district attorney indicting donald trump for actions that he took in the run up to him becoming the president in in that hush money payment scheme. we have a multi jurisdictional form of justice. they re from different jurisdictions for different crimes. the united states department of justice, this is the sort of republic at its, defending itself against itself in some senses here. it does feel like we are at the, you talk about all the clichés we is about g
to do this show was, again, another distinction here in terms of our multi jurisdictional system justice, is that this will be in federal courts. and it will be a test in the courts as well. we have seen various tests of the courts. we ve seen donald trump attempting to test court the aftermath of the 2020 election in the courts by and large did hold. how are you thinking about what this test challenge hosts for the court system, particularly federal courts? we re gonna see this play out, it seems, in the southern district of florida. that by itself is an unusual choice. here i m guided by my colleagues analysis. that may do in part to the case currently pending before the supreme court, smith versus the united states, i m just argued on march 28th because of a decided, that has real repercussions about bringing a prosecution in the venue that is improper. let me explain. that may explain jack smith moving the trial to the
there will be delays and arguments in litigation but one big thing the justice department has taken off the table is venue. and they brought this case in washington d.c. trump would ve argued it would have been properly brought in florida where most of the conduct, village conduct happened. now they ve eliminated part of that argument brown bringing this case to florida even though they know the jury warrior may be more difficult for the prosecution. all right, can dilanian, thank you for sharing all that fantastic reporting. i really appreciate it. we will check with you later this evening. we are joined now by eric holder, former attorney general of the united states. a pleasure to have you on tonight sir. the incredible surprises supreme court which upheld big part of section to the voting rights act throughout the congressional redistricting by the state of alabama, something you have been very invested in. but you are also the former attorney general united states.
reach for somebody who used to hold the highest office in the country. all right, laura jarrett, as always great to get your expertise on this. we ll be checking back, i mention. i want to bring in can delay any. he s the justice and jack correspondent nbc news. he s actually inside the courtroom in miami miami. you ve had your eyes peeled doing court watching all day. it looks like the moment has arrived. that s right, chris. we came here for a reason. it became clear over the last few days that the center of gravity in this case had shifted from washington veasey to here in miami here in south florida and we saw the senior member of the special counsel s team today come into this court out and courthouse and recently grande prairie was meeting. but we left today, not knowing an outcome. it s a secret process. we have no signals from the government or from other sources that this was eminent until trump himself announced
certainty, at this point. he s gonna be the nominee, unless there is some new facts that have surfaced in an indictment that s radically did limit different from what we know. i think there is going to be a rude awakening. he had it in a way, as you said, the 2020 election. you couldn t get through that through the court or the electoral process. i think the big thing, there is certainly a sense of the weightiness of the moment, that i think we are all feeling right now. but i think it s really important for all of us to step back and realize, when you break a lot of federal laws into it brazenly and over and over again, and with a clear assumption that nothing applies to you, there is a good chance you will be indicted in the federal courts. that s how night follows day. that is a normal thing. i think it s worth all of us pushing back on this idea of
