public safety, that cares about democracy, what happens, we did months ago? you go back to that night, on january six, the republicans began, trying to rewrite history, while the capital was still matt gates stood up in the house chamber, as if he was in fifa. sort of blaming, and they have the capacity to do that because they have this massive propaganda disinformation operation that dominates the internet, dominates people news, and they information bubble to tell a story, even that s the worst of facts. i mean, matt gates, marjorie taylor greene, she doesn t even have a committee assignment. she has done nothing, in terms of policy, legislative wins. yet, there s hugely powerful, in terms of media. is that whether publicans have figured out, that democrats have been doing their jobs? i think we live in attention economy, right? if you can get attention. attention is political power. marjorie taylor greene has left power in return for attention. mccarthy is scared of her be
was in the rotunda. that s when i described this as the worst attack on the capitol since the british burned the building during the war of 1812. neil? neil: chad, jimmy carter wrote in the new york times today that he seen a worsening in extreme views on the left and the right in that time. he fears this widening abyss will continue. something like this could happen again. you think that could happen again? there s a lot of people here on capitol hill that don t think the january 6 was just one day. that was the end. there is some here that think that that was the beginning. there s a pretty toxic atmosphere here on capitol hill. it s a chasm now between the sides. if you re trying to do collegelation, if you don t trust people on the other side, you think that there are security risks on the other side. remember, they pit these metal detectors to pass through to go in the house chamber.
you talk about gas masks. it s important to kind of put things into perspective, and what was going through your mind, congressman? you have a gas mask in your left hand, a bag. you re a member of congress in this extraordinary building that is the representation of our democracy and here you are having to deal with the possibility of putting on a gas mask or worse. what were some of the thoughts that were going through your mind as you kind of weighed what was going on and what this meant? i wasn t the only member who didn t know that there were masks under the chairs in the house chamber. i ve been a member for years and when we were instructed by the capitol police to get our gas masks from under our chairs, i was confused. i didn t know what that plastic box was. it was double wrapped.
