no person, having received the majority of the whole number of votes cast by surname, a speaker has not been elected. so, they voted again. no person having received the majority of the whole number of votes cast by surname, a speaker has not been elected. so, the third time was not the charm. and this lasted for almost five hours. we re talking about three consecutive ballots. and they could not elect a speaker of the house. and this was frankly a once in a century occurrence. this hasn t happened in the last 100 years, not to be able to finalize who was going to be your speaker in that first round, let alone after three rounds and there s still no conclusion. a tough day, everyone can say, for kevin mccarthy. after all of this time, his dream of being speaker was within his reach. and he believes it still is. but so far, it has succeeded his grasp. so, the question tonight is where are we now? so, there s still no speaker of the house. and they re going to do the wh
trouble tonight for the gop congressman-elect, george santos. remember, they have not yet been sworn into office. cnn has obtained court documents showing that he admitted to using stolen checks in brazil in 2008 to purchase clothing and shoes. brazilian authorities say they intend to reinstate fraud charges against santos. now they know where to find out. he disappeared off their radar for a decade. now meanwhile, santos was a member, seated in the house chamber today for the opening of the new congress. but he sat on his own, as many members of congress socialize with other members, or their families, who were also on hand for what was expected to be the big day. santos is beset by an ever growing scandal, that he falsified his resume about his family history, as well as financial, educational, and
classified. but he s also saying they re protected by executive privilege at the same time. he s talking about both sides of his mouth so doesn t make not much sense. there s another important thing about this cross memo today. it s 169 pages long, but it s only on one aspect of donald trump s criminal behavior. there s nothing in here about january six, nothing about 2020 election fraud, in georgia or things like that, nothing about his financial crimes. so i kind of think at some point soon we re going to need to get steve kornacki out here with his big board and keep track of all the legal problems donald trump is facing. we will do our best. neal katyal, thank you very much for joining us tonight. coming up, speaker nancy pelosi is handing over the democratic leadership of the house of representatives to a new generation. the youngest member of that new generation, who is in the house chamber today will join us next. next now s the time to learn more about an aarp
pelosi announcement today in the house? well, thank you so much for having me on, lawrence. it was incredibly sorry. or i remember seeing with my future colleagues, looking at each other before the speaker came out, all telling each other, it s surreal to be here for this historic moment. someone like speaker pelosi who has let our caucus through thick and thin, the dedication, the passing the baton to a new generation. it s exciting but she deserves the ability to make this decision. so i m excited to continue to serve with her. but also continue to serve with the future leadership we have here in the democratic caucus. have you had any time with the speaker yourself during what is now your freshman orientation week? not a ton of time. but we did have a dinner. it was a few days ago. and we had a great what it
