office and that is a small and narrow majority. and there are polls that show some people just haven t made up their minds. they need more information. something like 15% or something like that and that is what this is aimed to do. over the next week or so we ll hear from these witnesses, these are willing witnesses in a way that bob mueller wasn t. they want to tell their story, they want to testify before congress and get out in great detail as we saw from bill taylor what they saw and what their experienced. we have another one coming up on friday and into next week i think sondland is going to be really important. everybody keeps name dropping him as someone who talked directly to the president. so, listen, it is a long process. so far democrats should feel good because they have brought the public along certainly from where we were months ago about how the public felt about impeachment and can they keep doing that is a big question. and michael i want to come to you as not an
about this morning, including some new important reporting from bloomberg. jeff mason is here. jackie kucinich and shan wu. let me begin with the wave of subpoenas that is coming. should the american people expect that to actually result in something different? meaning, increased cooperation, or, say, if democrats vote overwhelmingly to move forward officially on this impeachment inquiry, does that mean the white house will all of a sudden cooperate? i don t think it s going to make a difference in terms of the white house s strategy on this. but legally it s an important step which is, by actually issuing the subpoenas they lay the foundation for two things. they can start to enforce them legally and it lays grounds for a nixon-type article of obstruction in the impeachment articles. ultimately, when you look at we had an impeachment lawyer on yesterday who has represented a number of governors who have gone through impeachment. he argues the obstruction article is not enough to
the new white house counsel, swan has been told, hired 17 lawyers for the counsel s office. some are very experienced from the george w. bush years but didn t experience with what the clinton administration did with impeachment and republicans controlling the house. the person who experienced that, emmitt flood, the whoite house lawyer, the president s impeachment lawyer tried to pass on lessons learned, talking to the come shop and other cabinet agencies what happens and how to deal with it. he s the only person inside with life experience to convince them of the magnitude of what s coming. live in washington, d.c., thank you. we will be reading axios in just a bit. sign up for the newsletter at axios.com. thank you for joining us.
an important point. we don t know why paul manafort s lawyers say he s not lying. sometimes that argument is made because the lawyers believe that it was just an honest lapse of recollection, a memory issue. sometimes they believe it s some other witness that is lying and the prosecutors will believe them instead. there could be a whole range of things. we don t often have an impeachment lawyer on the set with us. on the paul manafort issue, people noted how unusual it was for someone who had already pleaded guilty to be sharing information with someone else s team who may be a subject in this investigation. how unusual is that? did that set off alarm bells for you? to be clear, i have handled a lot of impeachments. but day-to-day, i represent public officials and government officials and campaigns and lots of things. we re not calling you the grim reaper or anything. so the answer is it is relatively unusual, but it is
an impeachment lawyer and you re probably on the wrong side of history. and i think people are thinking about what s their legacy. these are really, really important employment opportunities for lawyers. it s not the supreme court, but it s one of the best jobs you can get as a lawyer in terms of can creating your career. you have to think about what it does for your career and what role it plays in this democracy and what side of history you want to be on. there used to be no greater honor than representing the president of the united states. and coming up, long time new york socialist once said you do not know anyone as stupid as donald trump, and bob woodward s new book that he was absolutely right, especially when you hear donald trump talk about why he wanted to government to print more money. and later bill kairnz is going to join us with the latest update on hurricane florence.
