What Illinois new House speaker means for health care • Health care transformation plan heads to Pritzker s desk • More mass vaccination sites coming

Getty Images WHAT A NEW HOUSE SPEAKER MEANS FOR HEALTH CARE IN ILLINOIS: Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch was elected the state s first Black Speaker of the House on Wednesday, ending Michael Madigan s decades-long vice grip on power. Health care groups see the change in leadership as an opportunity to substantially address health inequity in the state. Welch was among the most vocal elected officials in 2019 when Westlake Hospital’s new owner announced plans to shutter the Melrose Park medical center. A member of the hospital s board of trustees, Welch said the move would limit access to health care for Black and Brown communities. Westlake’s controversial closure ultimately led to an Illinois Health Facilities Planning Act change that makes it easier for the state to limit a hospital s ability to close.
