The Catholic Diocese of Torit in collaboration with the Eastern Equatoria State government and with support from PAX (Protection of Civilians) organization, last week launched a Human Security Survey (HSS), a tool they say will help address rampant insecurity in the state.
The state has recently faced a spate of murders resulting from revenge killings, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), communal clashes, and highway robberies. In the last two weeks, the state recorded 11 deaths in Torit town, Torit East, Magwi, and Ikotos counties.

This report is presented by Adroit Consult International following a successful evaluation of the Emergency Mobile Health, Nutrition & Protection Project in Eastern Equatoria, South Sudan. This main objective of the endline evaluation was to provide information on the impact of the 3 year integrated Health, Nutrition and Gender Based Violence (GBV) project and also measure results at the outcome and impact levels. The evaluation was conducted with project stakeholders such as; Community leaders, Households of beneficiaries, Individual women and men, Children under five, Health workers, Government officials, CSO/NGO partners among others, and covered the areas of Lopa Lafon and Ikotos. The evaluation reached a total of 287 respondents in project implementation areas [27 pages].
Disabled man kills wife in Magwi
A disabled man identified only as Ohide on Tuesday beat his wife to death in South Sudan’s Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State.
This week alone, two women across Eastern Equatoria state lost their lives as a result of gender-based violence, the earlier case being in Ikotos County when a soldier punched his wife dead.
David Ocheng Tukwaro, Executive director of Magwi County told Radio Tamazuj yesterday, “A man killed his wife and that man happens to be disabled in one of his hands. He has children with the deceased and unfortunately lost his wife which is a setback to all of us the community of Magwi. The problem was caused by domestic issues that are known best to them, issues that could have been solved through dialogue but that person, because of drunkenness, he beat his wife to death.”
Soldier beats wife to death in Ikotos
A soldier belonging to the Wounded Heroes Unit in Ikotos county of South Sudan’s Eastern Equatoria state accidentally killed his wife on Tuesday morning during a domestic quarrel.
Residents in the area say the couple had a small misunderstanding which turned violent and led to the death of the woman. They say the man threw a forceful punch at the woman, who later succumbed to her injuries.
Police chief inspector in Ikotos county Mathew Ochan Jacob told Radio Tamazuj that the soldier is in custody.
“We got information that one private from the Wounded Heroes called Claudio Lopwanya, 56 years old, punched his wife until she died. The late is called Angelina Idwa and this incident happened at around 9 am but the suspect reported himself at around 1 pm, he said.
