Shortly before the fire, Brown grabbed the woman and argued with her after accusing her of theft, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney James Murphy told Judge Charles Beach. At least two people overheard the argument and Brown threatening to “burn the house down if his wallet” was not returned.

Reginald Brown, 63, charged with murder and aggravated arson, appeared before Cook County Judge Charles Beach, who denied bail for Brown during a hearing that was audio streamed live Thursday afternoon on YouTube. Brown was identified as the person “who intentionally started a fire at a residence” in the 8600 block of South Hermitage Avenue at 4 a.m. Feb. 28, and knew there were people inside the home and believed they were asleep when he set the fire, officials said.
