Icelandair Group has made preliminary deals with both Universal Hydrogen and Heart Aerospace with the goal of using planes fuelled by hydrogen and/or electricity on domestic routes.
Universal Hydrogen has developed a technology that could be used to retrofit Icelandair‘s Dash-8 passenger planes to have them run on hydrogen while Heart Aerospace plans to build passenger aircraft that will run on electricity, Mbl.is reports.

The networks of Icelandair and Air Iceland Connect are to be merged into a single entity from next week.
All sales and marketing efforts will be joined under the Icelandair brand from March 16th, with the full range of products and services accessible in one place.
Air Iceland Connect currently operates as the domestic airline of the Icelandair Group.
The objective of this integration is to ensure a sustainable future for domestic operations in Iceland and the West Nordic region, while also strengthening and simplifying operations.
With one strong brand, a simplified booking process and a unified distribution system, the integration allows Icelandair to focus on an improved and consistent customer experience across its entire route network.
MIAMI – Icelandair Group today said its previously announced integration of Icelandair (FI) with Air Iceland Connect (NY) will take effect on Tuesday, March 16.
“This change is a part of strengthening our domestic route network and will benefit passengers in many ways, from better prices to more destinations and added frequent flyer benefits,” the company said on its website. “Icelandair will therefore be a part of your Iceland journey, no matter whether you’re arriving, exploring, or departing.”
For passengers that means being able to book one ticket through Icelandair that includes travel on Air Iceland Connect’s domestic and Greenland routes.
