Asante Kotoko stunned by Medeama in Ghana Premier League

Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto made two changes to the side that started against Great Olympics in the previous games. Brazilian attacker Fabio Gama Dos Santos returned to the XI after serving a suspension while Augustine Okrah was similarly restored to the team after recovering from an injury. Medeama, on the other hand, had to do without Ghana midfielder Justice Blay, who sustained an injury while playing against Legon Cities on the previous matchday. Unlike Blay who missed a chance to face former side Asante Kotoko, Burkina Faso striker Amed Toure had the opportunity but could only do so from the bench.

Kotoko striker Francis Andy Kumi Asante Kotoko new striker Francis Andy Kumi has scored his first goal for the club in their Ghana Premier League win over Bechem United. The young striker joined the Porcupine Warriors from Division One league side Unistar Academy on transfer deadline day. The 22-year-old goal-poacher had his opportunity to start his first game for the Porcupine Warriors in a league clash against Bechem United at the Len Clay Stadium on Wednesday. The youngster had earlier shown glimpses of his threat when he had opportunities to score. His moment however came in the second half after a neat cross by left-back Ibrahim Imoro.

Kotoko s new Portuguese coach Mariano Barreto was on the bench for the first time on Wednesday, having had to watch Saturday s 1-1 draw with Eleven Wonders from the stands due to delay in completion of his work permit. The former Ghana coach made three changes to his side’s line-up, bringing back Samuel Frimpong and Habib while handing a first start to Kumi. New Brazilian signing Vinicius also made the Porcupines bench for the first time. Kumi could have put Kotoko in the lead just two minutes into the game but his header on Ibrahim Imoro s delivery went straight to Bechem goalkeeper Daniel Afadzwu.

Asante Kotoko see off Karela United to move top of Ghana Premier League

The Kumasi-based side have set their sights on winning their first GPL title since 2014. At the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Clinton Duodu, Hafiz Konkoni Wontah, and Moro Salifu scored to ensure a 3-1 win over Great Olympics, who scored through Charles Danso on the stroke of full-time. The Hunters are third on the log, one place above the Wonders Boys.  Aduana Stars continue to their chase of the leaders with a 1-0 home triumph over Wafa, courtesy of an Emmanuel Baffour effort in the 54th minute. The Fire Boys are fifth on the table while the Academy Boys are eighth. 

Ghana Premier League Wrap: Asante Kotoko begin post-Konadu era on high

Kotoko came into Sunday s fixture under pressure following a surprising 1-0 home defeat to Great Olympics in midweek. The loss led to the dismissal of coach Maxwell Konadu. The 23-time GPL champions now turn their attention to the Caf Champions League where they host Al Hilal of Sudan in the first round on Wednesday. Elsewhere in the Premier League on Sunday, Great Olympics made it two wins in row with a 1-0 home victory over Wafa, courtesy of Gladson Awako s 27th minute effort. The victory has taken the Wonder Boys to third on the league table but level on points with fourth-placed Wafa.
