ANALYSIS: Buratai: A legacy blotted by massacres, extrajudicial killings Tukur Buratai, a lieutenant general, was pulled out of the army on Friday after his resignation as army chief three days earlier. 6 min read The over five years that Tukur Buratai used as Nigeria’s army chief may have been characterised by some successes against Boko Haram, but it was also filled with massive extrajudicial killings of hundreds of Nigerians by soldiers under his watch. Majority of the soldiers and officers involved in the extrajudicial killings were never prosecuted or punished for their crimes, an indication the atrocities were committed with the approval of the army leadership led by Mr Buratai. In fact, in one of the cases, the army murdered hundreds of unarmed civilians and said it did so because they had blocked a road being used by Mr Buratai and thus endangered his life.

Irabor, Amao, Gambo assume duty as Nigeria s service chiefs

5 min read The new Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor, a major general, on Friday, took over the mantle of the leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria from his predecessor, Gabriel Olonisakin, a general, in Abuja. His newly nominated colleagues also took charge as helmsmen at the navy and air force. President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday appointed Mr Irabor alongside the three service chiefs. The president named Ibrahim Attahiru as chief of army staff, Isiaka Amao as chief of air staff and Auwal Gambo as chief of naval staff.
