FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. (KFVS) - Multiple fire rescue crews responded to a crash on Interstate 57 near the 69 mile marker in Franklin County on Thursday night, April 29.
This is just before the Benton, Illinois exit.
At this time, little information is known, but the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency sent out an alert stating the crash involved a SEMI .
Two people were transported to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and one person was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said. All three people were initially listed in serious condition, according to Merritt.
One person was later pronounced dead, according to state police.
A fourth occupant was not wounded in the shooting, state police said.
All northbound lanes of I-57 near 119th Street remained closed as of 4 a.m., state police said.
The shooting comes amid a spike in violence on the Chicago area s expressways. As of late last week, authorities said 38 expressway shootings had been reported since the year began, a number that more than triples the amount of shootings seen at the start of 2020.
A person was killed in a crash Sunday on Interstate 57 on the South Side, and a good Samaritan who pulled over to help was injured in a hit-and-run, state police said.
A Franklin County man is dead following a traffic crash on Interstate 57 before dawn Friday morning.
Illinois State Police say 70-year-old James Bean of West Frankfort was pronounced dead at the scene near the Benton exit.
Troopers say Bean s car and a tractor trailer were both headed north on I-57 before 5 a.m. when the semi collided with Bean s car, causing him to lose control and run off the roadway. Bean was ejected from the car after it overturned. The driver of the semi did not stop and fled the scene.
The Division of Criminal Investigations and the Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit will continue the investigation.
