Can We Adapt Old Power Plants to Run on Green Hydrogen?

Star Scientific is a 25-year-old research laboratory north of Sydney, Australia. The company is one of many trying to make existing power plants carbon-free. This includes old coal-fired thermal power stations which remain among the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions on the planet. Star has invented a patented non-polluting catalyst which it calls HERO® which is

Australian green hydrogen innovator to flip coal-fired fleet in the Philippines

Australian green hydrogen innovator to flip coal-fired fleet in the Philippines Australia s Star Scientific has signed a deal with the Department of Energy in the Philippines to use its hydrogen tech. The partnership could see Star Scientific transform every coal-fired power plant in the nation to green hydrogen, while also using the tech to provide desalinated water. From pv magazine Australia In December, S&P Global Platts awarded its Emerging Technology of the Year Award to Australia s Star Scientific for its Hydrogen Energy Release Optimizer (HERO). Star Scientific s technology can transition coal-fired electricity plants to green energy, desalinate water in a clean .

Australian invented catalyst may be key to creating a global hydrogen economy

3 February 2021 An Australian developed hydrogen ‘catalyst’ could be the key to shifting the global energy system to hydrogen, with its Australian inventors signing a landmark deal to advise the Philippine government on a potential transition to a green hydrogen economy. Star Scientific has developed an innovative new catalyst material, dubbed the Hydrogen Energy Release Optimizer or HERO, which it says has the ability to convert hydrogen into heat without combustion, and at a very high thermal efficiency. Star Scientific says the catalyst coating has the potential for use in the production of high temperature steam, allowing existing thermal power stations to be retrofitted to run on hydrogen, as well as allowing industrial operations to use hydrogen as an effective source of heat.

Hydrogen potential: Philippines partners with Australian company as it targets energy independence

Offshore wind resources Under the MoU, the parties will investigate ways in which Hero technology can be used to convert existing power assets within the Philippines to zero-emission hydrogen assets, such as retro-fitting existing coal-fired power plants to run on the Hero system powered by green hydrogen. They will also look to explore utilising green hydrogen production in the Philippines using an abundance of offshore wind resources. The parties will also look at the viability of increased distribution of emission-free power by way of a supercritical CO 2 grid network powered by Hero technology. They will also work together to investigate desalination options for both existing and new systems throughout the Philippines through the use of the Hero technology.
