Australian company Star Scientific wins inaugural World Hydrogen Awards

An Australian developed hydrogen ‘catalyst’ could be the key to shifting the global energy system to hydrogen, with its Australian inventors signing a landmark deal to advise the Philippine government on a potential transition to a green hydrogen economy.
Star Scientific has developed an innovative new catalyst material, dubbed the Hydrogen Energy Release Optimizer or HERO, which it says has the ability to convert hydrogen into heat without combustion, and at a very high thermal efficiency.
Star Scientific says the catalyst coating has the potential for use in the production of high temperature steam, allowing existing thermal power stations to be retrofitted to run on hydrogen, as well as allowing industrial operations to use hydrogen as an effective source of heat.

Star Scientific has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the
Department of Energy of the Republic of the Philippines to help drive the country’s energy self-sufficiency and economic development through green hydrogen as a fuel source.
At the heart of the MOU is Star Scientific Limited’s breakthrough technology, the
Hydrogen Energy Release Optimizer or HERO®. The S&P Platts award-winning HERO® technology is a true catalyst that converts hydrogen and oxygen into heat and water, without degrading the catalyst. There is no combustion, and the only outputs are heat and pure water. The HERO® can generate temperatures beyond 700 degrees Celsius in just over three minutes, and it is being used as the heat source in the HERO® heat exchanger system.
The Philippines eyes green hydrogen as a fuel source
The Philippines has inked a deal with Australian hydrogen research and development company Star Scientific to help transition the entire nation to green hydrogen.
The first-of-its-kind agreement for an Australian business will see Star Scientific look into retrofitting the Philippines’ existing coal-fired power plants to run on its HERO® technology.
