this area alongside the salmon river south of malone, new york. they ve set up this perimeter around 22 square miles of forest land bordering this river that block blockades after matt was shot and killed by a federal agent. what led police to this scene, they were searching in the area when a driver who had a camper reported that his camper had been shot. it had a bullet hole in it. police came to the area where he thought he got that gunshot into the camper. they found a cabin that had been broken into. there was evidence that the prisoners might have been in that area recently. when they went outside they heard a noise and saw richard matt. they ordered him to stop put his hands in the air. they said he wouldn t comply. that s when they shot and killed him. they recovered a .20-gauge shotgun from him. police believe matt and sweat were traveling together. their dna was found in a hunting cabin about a week ago.
thank you for being out there along with him days on end trying to find this guy. now, joining us is detective joe who trains law enforcement officers. thanks for being here and important to get the perspective. we have seen the knewnew photo and this is where they spent some time and what do you note when you see this photo. what is it a note to you. you re seeing a sofa or tv. what are you looking for? well anything that s going to give these guys stuff like the food and water and that kind of stuff. also ammunition and of course camouflage clothing and you can help them evade the police. so when you see this what do you see? well what we re looking at is something that you would see in an ordinary hunting cabin. it s a perfect opportunity for them to go down. it s the wood panelling that they could provide the
shot and killed. police believe his fellow escapees is in this area. they ve got a 22 square mile area surrounded. they believe he s in the area. but they admit they have not seen sweat. the only sign they have that he s been in this area came his dna showed up in another hunting cabin with some food items were left on the table. they have no reason to believe the pair have split up. they have no evidence they did not split up. they feel like they are closing in on sweat at this time. and the investigation here south of malone new york continues. a perimeter set up around 22 square miles. police believe they are closing in on sweat. how important is it to authorities they take sweat alive? they won t be getting any information out of matt. it is important to get him alive to be able to find out more about the escape? the head of the state police
vehicles flying down here. in fact there are more on their way and going through this road block down here. what we know is that richard matt has been shot and killed according to senior new york officials but that his sidekick david sweat, is roaming in these woods right now. chris? stephanie, it sounds like again, we don t have a hard confirmation of the last of any spotting of david sweat. there s some reporting we have that there was evidence at the site where richard matt was shot and killed around 3:45 p.m. that sweat was near. stephanie, you were in that second cabin where i believe richard matt s dna was found from earlier this week. what did you see in that cabin? chris, we actually went to the first cabin that they were here near owls head. this is a hunting cabin that s up in the woods. it was an incredible journey we took today with two local hunters that brought us up there. what you were struck by almost immediately is we went by half a
bottle on the kitchen table at his hunting cabin. he told authorities he had not left that there and he s been checking on this cabin every couple of days just to make sure that it s been secure. well willett began speaking to authorities and that s when all of them began hearing gunshots. he was told to get back inside as police moved closer to the sound of those gunshots. and again, that s one of the things that sort of tipped them off, triggered this entire sort of movement to that area of malone, new york, wolf. it s a really obviously a very very dangerous moment right now. i want to go to our just tins correspondent pamela brown, also working her sources. what else are you learning pamela? wolf we re learning a bit more about what led up to the shoot-out between authorities and richard matt. we ve learned that that driver of the camper heard gunshots called 911 earlier this afternoon. but at that point, apparently the driver didn t realize that his camper had been hit, got
