Jury selection in NJ courts may change to check for racial bias

In Elizabeth, jurors in a carjacking case shared their unease at seeing Black men in a mostly white neighborhood. The conviction of two African Americans in the trial was later overturned.  In Camden, a juror cited a Hindu doctor s refusal to put his hand on the Bible while being sworn in for a sexual harassment case. And in Paterson, an assistant prosecutor dismissed three African Americans from the jury pool in a notorious murder trial, questioning whether they would be impartial. Two of the potential jurors were struck for a hairstyle that supposedly indicated  a more permissible attitude. The prejudices that jurors may carry into the courthouse are under renewed scrutiny in New Jersey, where the judiciary is considering changes to try to account for implicit bias among the residents who decide guilt or innocence.
