We did see declines yesterday of about a half percent across all three of the major averages. Today we are bouncing back a bit. The dow up by 20 points or so. Worth noting that all 11 sectors of the s p were lower yesterday. A broad selloff. Telcos taking the brunt, down more than 2 tenyear treasury note above 2. 4 this week if we have a look at it this morning, its still year yields slipped a bit 2. 44 yesterday 2. 42 today. Looking at whats going on overseas asian equities mixed overnight we saw mixed market in china south korea down a half percent. Shanghai up about a third of a percent. And we saw in japan the nikkei led by financials and automakers the messaging service line up 17 on earnings. That was one i wanted to point out. The Oregon Rare Books Initiative was begun three or four years ago. By a couple of colleagues here at oregon. Its aim is to increase the use of the rare book and special Collections Archives among faculty and students and in the classroom here at the university of oregon. The initiative was founded in 2013. Colleagues, including myself, have been upstairs in the vault where these rare books are stored, along with librarians, including bruce tabb wlorks have helped us to find , who have helped us to find books we did not know we owned. The been a rediscovery of some of the amazing rare and collectible books that have been here often since the early 19th century, and were using them in our research and classes in a way that we hadnt for several decades. When we invite a visiting scholar to come give a talk here, we encourage that person to consult in our collection upstairs and find some of the rare books that he or she has worked on and that are of interest in that field. Downstairs, in the gallery, on the west side of the museum, there is a room with a taxidermy bison. If you look to the left of the bison, there are a couple cases. One of them is a case of artifacts related to the battle of the little bighorn. Inside that case, there is a firearm, a springfield, acquired from a native named little moon. You can look at that object and contemplate how it changed hands, the travels that it took prior to that and the ways that might help us think differently about history in the west. Coincidentally, in the west, there is a small macabre basket. Maybe after this talk, you will be able to look at those objects differently. Maybe the objects will help you reflect on the talk differently.
