Tipton County, City councils punt on immediate police, fire pay raises Kokomo Tribune (IN) Tipton County Council and the City Council passed on giving immediate pay raises for their respective public safety employees, but both boards said they would not abandon the issue completely. The County Council voted 5-0 Tuesday to table a resolution that would ve increased the base pay for sheriff deputies to $51,000 and Brian Nichols was the only council member to abstain from the vote; Councilman Butch Harpel was not present at the meeting. A separate motion made by Nichols to increase pay to $50,000 and $37,000 for deputies and correctional officers, respectively, failed after not receiving a second.

CITY OF NEW FRANKLIN MAY SOON BE WITHOUT A POLICE DEPARTMENT

One area community may soon be without a designated police department. Howard County Sheriff Jeff Oswald and the New Franklin Board of Alderman discussed eliminating the New Franklin Police Department at the most recent meeting of the Board on January 11, 2021. Mike Wise, police chief of the New Franklin Police Department, announced via Facebook on Tuesday, if the department is eliminated, the city would instead rely on the Howard County Sheriff’s Department, which in turn, would have a dedicated officer in the southern part of the county. The change is expected to save the city money while bolstering the Sheriff’s Department.

Our partners at the Kokomo Tribune report 26-year-old Anthony Benedict was driving south on CR 1150 West when his pick-up truck continued straight through a curve in the road near CR 00 NS. The newspaper cited the Howard County Sheriff s Department, which reported Benedict s truck struck a tree, then went down into a ravine that could not be seen from the road.

Robert Bob Cox, 81, passed away at 3:44 AM on December 29, 2020. He was born on February 4, 1939 to John and Juanita (Taylor) Cox in Kokomo. On November 29th, 1958, Bob married Sandra (Bergstrom) Cox. Bob graduated in 1956 from Kokomo High School and served in the National Guard. He served on the Kokomo Fire Department from 1963 to 1988 as Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, District Chief and Chaplain. He also worked at Superior Glass and Paint. After retirement from KFD, he served as the Kokomo Rescue Mission s Executive Director from 1988 to 2006. While serving as the Director, he was instrumental in building the current Mission building and Open Arms for women and children. He also traveled to Russia several times, orchestrating the sending of several containers of relief aid to Moscow. Upon retiring from the Mission, he received the Distinguished Hoosier Award from the Governor s Office, a Key to the City and Proclamation from the Mayor s Office. He served as Chaplain for t
