The Indian government aims to complete the construction of 29.3 million houses for rural poor by December 2023, with 24 million already completed. The remaining 5.3 million houses are expected to be finished ahead of the January 2024 deadline. The government plans to reach key milestones in its flagship schemes on important dates, such as Independence Day, to showcase its success ahead of the next general election. The budget for rural housing has been increased to ?54,487 crore, while the budget for the urban version of the scheme has been reduced to ?25,103 crore.
