The Killing of Lisa Thorborg
Thorborg was a beloved grandmother who had moved to Carlsbad with her family just 6 months ago.
On the morning of Nov. 23, Carlsbad Police Department detectives believe Thorborg went hiking alone on a trail that runs through Hosp Grove Park – just blocks away from her home.
Investigators said Thorborg had posted some messages on social media in the days leading up to her killing asking if there was anyone around who wanted to go hiking with her.
“Hiking anyone?” she posted on NextDoor, a social media site that connects neighbors. “I would love the company.”
The Carlsbad Police Department is still investigating those posts and whether they had anything to do with Thorborg’s killing.
CARLSBAD
A 17 year old boy pleaded not guilty Thursday to murder in the stabbing death of a 68-year-old grandmother as she hiked a Carlsbad trail last month.
The Carlsbad teen, whose name has not been released because of his age, remains in custody at Juvenile Hall in San Diego, where he has been since his arrest as a suspect in the slaying of Lisa Thorborg.
Thorborg’s body was found Nov. 23 midmorning on a Monday on Hosp Grove trail, not far southeast of Buena Vista Lagoon. Blood at the scene tipped police that her death was suspicious. An autopsy revealed she had been stabbed.
NBC 7 s Dave Summers shares reaction from the community, and the family of the victim.
“I would keep looking it up on my phone to see if they found out anything on what happened with that lady,” said Carlsbad mother Julie Capps.
She knew about Monday’s arrest before NBC 7 could ask.
“My husband saw it on the news and told me about it,” said Capps.
The Carlsbad Police Department arrested the murder suspect, a 17-year-old Carlsbad resident, on a city beach on Monday.
“It’s painful,” said Capps. “It’s painful. I have a son who’s 18 and he might know this boy. We might know this family.”

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - After Monday s arrest in the death of a Carlsbad woman found on a hiking trail, prosecutors must now decide whether to charge the teenage suspect as an adult.
A 17-year-old teen from Carlsbad was booked on murder charges weeks after Lisa Thorborg, 68, was found stabbed to death along Hosp Grove Trail.
Investigators tell ABC 10News police work led them to the teenager, before DNA evidence confirmed their suspicions. Former District Attorney turned criminal defense attorney Paul Pfingst says prosecutors must now decide whether the accused should be tried as an adult.
