Massachusetts Fishing Report – May 13, 2021

As stripers fill in, “slots” are now joining the micros. More fish means more habitat where you’ll find them, with beaches and herring runs leading to bigger-than-average bass.
A few friends and I each year tempt fate and hop aboard Captain Jason Colby’s
Little Sister on Mother’s Day for a little flounder fishing. In addition to catching fish the priority is not to tick off the special women in our lives and make it home at a reasonable time. The bite in Quincy Bay started off slow but as typical of flounder fishing as the sun crept higher in the sky and conditions got more comfortable, the flounder began feeding. We achieved half limits, had a lot of laughs and reveled in what a difference a year makes as last season something like this would not have been possible. It’s been a tough year, but there’s good news on many fronts not the least of which is the flounder are back! Additionally, there was a nice

With schoolies swarming most inshore areas, you should have no problem catching.
While the weather has not been fisher-friendly it sure hasn’t stopped the ongoing migration of our beloved striper as reports of fresh fish trickle in from the South Shore through the North Shore. Haddock remain the hot ticket for deeper water adventurers with the haul not necessarily as far from port as you may think. With the focus so totally now on linesiders, you may find freshwater honey holes now lacking company.
Massachusetts South/Boston Fishing Report
Pete Belsan of
Belsan Bait and Tackle in Scituate said that schoolie bass up to the mid-20” range are beginning to swarm the Three Bays, Scituate Harbor, the North River and all the way into Cohasset. The new Bill Hurley ABB stick bait has been one of the more consistent catchers for these fresh fish. Divers are reporting tautog moving upstream into estuaries and bays as they prepare to spawn.

Well, they are here! Fresh schoolies have invaded Greater Boston and while I haven’t heard, I suspect the South Shore as well! However, if you can cool your engines just a little longer, you may find incredible haddock fishing! Still, it is only April and the freshwater fishing is so good that it underscores the “sweet” in sweetwater!
I don’t exactly need an arm-twisting to talk about fishing, so it didn’t take much prodding from Captain Brian Coombs of Get Tight Sportfishing to convince me to give my take on flounder fishing at Monahan Marine in Weymouth Saturday. While I believe it went well, there were times I may have looked a bit distracted. A last minute cancellation freed up the chance to hit the haddock grounds with Captain Jason Colby and friends aboard the

With so many taking to groundfishing and having a heck of a time with sweetwater pursuits, the imminent arrival of “you know what” is almost an afterthought! Perusing some of the photos and the variety of what I’m seeing leaves one inescapable conclusion: striped bass can wait!
Massachusetts Freshwater Fishing Report
According to Rod from
Flagg’s Fly and Tackle in Orange, the Quabbin Reservoir season kicked off in fine fashion with cooperative landlocked salmon up to 6 1/2 pounds! Rod’s hand tied Fire Smelt streamers have been killer; in fact he had to cut short our conversation he was so busy tying to meet demand! The wind kept most in close to the boat launch sites but it didn’t matter. Two/three pound lakers are ubiquitous to where they are almost a nuisance with anglers fishing from shore at Gates 16 and 35 catching all the forkies they could handle. Rainbows have been willing from shore at Gate 31.
