For others, it was the year they lost a loved one to a disease they’d never heard of before 2020. “I miss just getting out and seeing people and going to church,” said retired nurse and Red Cross volunteer Annie Kynard-Hackworth, whose husband died of COVID-19. “I need to hug people and actually be around them,” she said. For others, it was the year they lost a job, or their business went under, or they had to scrape by for months with little or no income.

He took a job at a grocery store as a stopgap “because you’ve got to pay rent, you’ve got to do stuff.” Thomas, now 22, eventually landed another barista gig, at downtown’s Honest Coffee Roasters, where he’s worked for eight months or so. He calls Honest Coffee owner Christy Graves continuing to hire during the pandemic “a huge blessing.”

It’s all part of the United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Huntsville’s first ever “Flipping for the Future” Renovation Challenge. Several local businesses have taken on the challenge to flip outdated dollhouses, which are put on display. Leslie Walker, the Community Engagement Manager for UCP Huntsville said the pandemic has made fundraising extra challenging this year. That’s how the idea of “Flipping for the Future” was sparked.
