A RACEHORSE trainer is fearing for the future of his business over plans for a concrete crusher. Chris Gordon, based in Morestead, said he wanted to die at the yard he has been operating from since 2007. But a man named only as Mr Fowler has submitted plans for a concrete crusher at Unit 3 Morestead Farm – just a stone s throw from Mr Gordon s paddock. If the application is approved, the trainer would be forced to sell his land and move elsewhere. This is a massive thing for us, said Mr Gordon. Concrete crushers and racehorses simply do not go together. The stables here were made from reclaimed materials just after Word War One, and horses have been trained here for more than 65 years. When I looked to set up my business, I moved here to the South Downs because of the location: it is a lovely, healthy and quiet environment.
WORK on a £10 million programme to improve Silsden s electricity network will start this month. Northern Powergrid says the project – which will run until the end of 2024 – will involve the replacement of five kilometres of extra-high-voltage underground cables and 55km of overhead lines, dating back to the 1960s. The programme, which is scheduled to start on May 24, comprises 11 separate schemes. Also included will be the construction of a new electricity substation. Northern Powergrid says the work will help the town meet future power demands and significantly enhance the landscape, with a number of existing power lines and electricity poles due for removal.
A MAJOR £10 million project will get underway in Silsden later this month to upgrade the power network which serves the town. Starting on Monday, May 24, and running until the end of 2024, the investment work consists of eleven separate schemes and focuses on replacing 5km of extra high voltage underground electricity cables, and 55km of overhead lines dating back to the 1960s, with more modern and sustainable alternatives. A new electricity substation is also being constructed. This new equipment will be capable of meeting any future increase in the demand for power as the town develops, the population grows and more people swap their cars for electric vehicles.

A man wanting to end his own life was found back on the same bridge over one of Stoke-on-Trent s busiest roads - just hours after being released from a psychiatric hospital.
Mental health campaigner Craig Spillane discovered the man - in his 50s - on Holden Lane bridge above Leek New Road, in Sneyd Green.
