there are other tools out there, rovs, auvs, and, of course, submersibles that have their depth limits that can be used in this particular circumstance in the right order and in the right fashion and only if we have tangible evidence of where to search. reporter: now we re learning resources are pulling out of search. the royal navy today says the hms tireless, the only submarine in the search, is done. saying there is no longer any prospect of detecting black box pings. and now one of the surface ships, the hms echo returning to port to refuel, leaving it out of the loop for now. and as for that underwater search, we expect crews to shift to the north from where they re searching right now very soon. possibly this weekend. wolf? all right. pamela, stand by. i want to two to the base of the operations for the search. cnn s miguel marquez joining us once again. liveaustralia. what are you learning there, miguel? reporter: look, we know
and a threat of violent storms and tornadoes across much of the country s heartland. let s begin with cnn s miguel marquez. he s got the latest in perth, australia. miguel? hello there, wolf. clearly things are in transition both the hms echo and the hms tireless that had been participated in this search is now headed to port or is now in port. the ocean shield is continuing to search for that plane but says it s now searching areas adjacent to that most hoped for area to find flight 370. reporter: a new show of anger by flight 370 families camped out in beijing chanting tell the truth and stop lying.
australian officials say the next step would be expanding the search area. we re also hearing today the british ship, the hms echo, is heading back to perth to get replenishment. uk officials say it will be ready to go back out to search area when it s needed. joined once again by the former fbi agent who is the founder and ceo south asia middle east consultants. also our analyst, former ntsb managing director peter goelz. let s get right to our question from a viewer. stacy asked this, it s been 50 days, surely a piece of the plane would have surfaced by now. are i would say their best judgme judgment, and it s got to be 90 plus% is that the plane went into the ocean and it went into the ocean off of perth. but remember that area has been hit by at least two cyclones and it didn t get there until after the first cyclone had passed
down. the second problem was an oil leak. the searchers say it was no big deal and they fixed it and sent it back down. in all they covered 35 square miles of the ocean floor down there. and once they ve downloaded this latest data they ll send it down again. in terms of analyzing the data no information about what they got or what they saw on this third trip, right? not yet. we they do tend to release it to us reasonably quickly. the first two said nothing of significance in the data. the first time they went down there, that is the area they really want to search and it was cut short because the bluefin thought it was too deep for it to go. what they did was move the hms echo which does its own sonar examination from the surface and they worked out that the depth
echo moved in that area to get more details about the situation in that as far as the ocean floor, how deep is the water, what s the topography? we know it was only 100 meters deeper than it was programmed to, so it was about 4,600 meters. that s new data the u.s. navy now has from hms echo, that that area that forced bluefin to abort was about 4,600 meters deep. they re saying they could maybe push it to 4,000. looks like that may be something bluefin will be able to handle. i asked to check with the manufacturer of bluefin, if they ve done rehearsals, test runs with the bluefin. they had 35, 40 days to get ready for this before. they said not in the indian ocean, but did testing off the coast of hawaii in march. is that good enough? well, you think if they were going to be brought online and they knew they were coming, they might have got it out there and
