The Newark Avenue Pedestrian Plaza, in Downtown Jersey City, will undergo a major overhaul now that the city council adopted a resolution approving a nearly $6.7 million construction contract. The pedestrian mall was first closed to vehicles in 2015 as an experiment to limit traffic and create a pedestrian destination, according to the city. It was then expanded to a second block in 2018 and further expanded in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic to include portions of Grove Street between Montgomery Street and Christopher Columbus Drive as well as First Street and Newark Avenue.

The group joined with the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District for their first “Christmas around JC” event, in which local restaurants donated some of their favorite signature dishes. JCRA President Carmen Mendiolla said at least 18 city restaurants, including Boa Café, Porta and Beechwood Café, participated in dinner distribution on First Street. She said the response was overwhelming they planned to be out there until 6 p.m., but they ran out of food by 4:30 p.m.
