China’s growth is projected at 5.2 percent in 2023 before slowing to 4.5 percent in 2024. The outlook is clouded by continued weakness in the real estate sector and persistently tepid global demand in the short term, as well as structural constraints to growth, including high debt levels, population aging, and slower productivity growth than in the past.
The Yunnan Early Childhood Education Innovation Project significantly enhanced early childhood education in Yunnan Province. During the five-year project period (2016–21), gross enrollment ratio (GER) increased from 54 percent to 88 percent and student–teacher ratios fell from 20.0:1 to 12.6:1.
Most developing East Asia and Pacific economies have bounced back from recent shocks and are growing. However, slowing global growth, elevated commodity prices and tightening financial conditions will affect economies in the region in 2023.
