Three days after Grace Ross was found dead in the woods, little is known about what happened to the 6-year-old, as police continue to investigate and the community tries to heal.
Grace was reported missing by her family about 6:30 p.m. Friday; she was last seen in the area of Chapman Drive. Her body was found two hours later in a wooded area nearby. An autopsy found the cause of Graceâs death to be homicide by asphyxiation.
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is handling the investigation and police have arrested a 14-year-old boy in connection with her death. The boyâs name has not been released and as of Monday evening, no charges have been filed in adult court.
A teenage boy has since been arrested in connection with the case. His identity is currently being withheld as he is progressing through the juvenile system.
Local news source WSBT reports that preliminary autopsy results show that the six-year-old died of homicide by asphyxiation.
The girl s school have since released a statement, saying: Our school district and school family has suffered a tremendous loss. This past Friday evening one of our fellow students in kindergarten at Olive Elementary died. The circumstances of the student s death are under investigation. Local police have arrested a suspect and have them in custody. There will be counsellors and local pastors available tomorrow for students and staff to talk with during the school day.
