Hundreds of thousands of Berliners have been left shocked. Rents will soar again. What’s more, tenants must immediately transfer, to the landlords, all rental arrears accrued during the last year, or face the prospect of eviction! However, some companies (Vonovia, Heimstaden) will waive the payments.
On Tuesday, Senator for Construction, Sebastian Scheel (45), is to present a proposal to the Senate. The subject of said proposal: a hardship ruling, with plans for a €10 million aid-fund to be used for loans, and grants, for tenants who have problems with the extra payments.

Empty desks, full mail-boxes, and porters watering the flowers. Berlin’s offices lie dormant. People are working from home, where a laptop, WiFi and a VPN connection play vital roles.
The new requirement, for companies to have staff work from home, has been in effect since Wednesday. And, since Wednesday, those exempt from the stipulation, working at insurance companies, architectural offices, call centres and in open-plan offices can expect surprise visits.
The State Office for Occupational Safety and Health (LAGetSi) is to inspect 80 companies a week on behalf of, Labour Senator, Elke Breitenbach (59, Linke).
The allocation of Nursery School “emergency care” places in Berlin is being reorganised.
These rules now apply: Children from one parent-families in “emergency situations”, and families in “social emergencies” are entitled to a place.
Now there is a third group: whilst up to now it was only about “extraordinary” need, from this point on: a parent’s profession will also play a part. Children will be entitled to an emergency nursery school place, if one parent works in what is defined as a so-called „system relevant profession“.
Senator for Youth Services, Sandra Scheeres (SPD): “I take the feedback from nursery schools, on the increasing number of infected children, very seriously. Teachers are concerned about their own health. With the new regulations, we are increasing the security, and supporting the coordination process between nursery schools and parents. I ask all those involved for mutual understanding and solidarity.“
