Rishi Sunak risks sexism row as TV presenter Kate Thornton says price hikes on wine ‘will hit women hardest’ Nic Cecil
Rishi Sunak faced a sexism row today over hiking tax on wine - a drink favoured by women - more than beer.
Television presenter Kate Thornton, who hosts the White Wine Question Time podcast, argued that if the Chancellor hikes duty on wine more than beer it would “hit women the hardest”.
She was speaking out as part of a campaign by the Wine Drinkers UK group which is urging Mr Sunak to cut excise duty on wine, a move which would be surprising given the state of the public finances.

The Three Drinkers show on Amazon Prime TV, when he started out in the trade he felt he had to hide who he was to fit in. When embarking on a career in drinks, Smith hid his Tourette’s syndrome and his sexuality. “People in the industry still just have me down as eccentric,” he says.
A third (32%) of UK adults who drink alcohol say wine is their favourite alcoholic drink, new research reveals. The YouGov data, published by Wine Drinkers UK (WDUK), shows wine beats beer (25%) and spirits (25%) into second and third place, respectively. The brand is supporting the group s Mind, Sense & Soul: Life Hacks for a Calmer 2021 campaign, with a focus on its alcohol-free range, McGuigan Zero. The campaign features a series of videos hosted by TV presenters and drinks writers Aidy Smith and Helena Nicklin, who showcase tips and coping mechanisms designed to calm anxieties and bring a bit of positivity to 2021. A total of 12 videos will go live on The Three Drinkers website and social channels throughout January, each exploring a different theme with topics including Light, Sound, Write and Move.
