I would ask consent that my written Opening Statement be entered into the record. As a hearing on the border we havent had one for quite a few months, so i obviously need to use a chart. Thats really what i want to talk about in my opening comments. Weve held i think close to 40 hearings on some aspect of the issues on the border and with our broken immigration system, began keeping this chart on unaccompanied children but then as the whole issue with people coming across and exploiting our asylum laws coming as families, the problem just exploded in late 2018 and into 2019, and the main reason i want to show this chart, youll see the gold colored bars are single adults, down slightly, pretty persistent, pretty stable for the, you know, eight years this chart represents. I live in this neighborhood for about two years now and im used to the sound of the elevator train and up the streets the cars that are around. And where the kids play. Some people might think its colorful, you know . But when you live here you call it something else, because it doesnt look good or smell good or feel good. Especially not when youre sick. Not when your body hurts. And you want to make it well. It took a while, but weve got a good answer to sickness in this part of new york. Its part of a new idea thats going on in other cities too. You know . All over the country. Here in the bronx, we call it the Montefiore Health center where people from my neighborhood can come and have their sickness treated and their hurt made well. It draws upon the same science and uses the same instruments and equipment that helped services traditionally do, but in the philosophy its different in startling and significant ways.
