New Tobacco Regulations Prohibit Smoking, Vaping In Public; Restrict Sales

Beginning June 1, smoking and vaping in Falmouth will be further restricted in where and what tobacco products can be sold and by prohibiting smoking and vaping in workplaces and public places, including parks, town beaches and public streets. The board of health on March 15 voted for the revamped regulations that also include capping the number of tobacco retail permits in town at 35. The regulations state the intent is to gradually reduce the number of tobacco product sales permits in town by denying a permit holder a renewed license if it does not reapply within 60 days of the permit expiration. The board updated the regulations based on model regulations provided by the state and now mirror state law, Health Agent Scott McGann said.

Four More Goals

It’s good to see that the select board, in extending Town Manager Julian Suso’s contract for another three years, is tying future increases in compensation to performance and the attainment of clear and measurable goals. Select board chair Megan English Braga explained the thinking behind the performance-based clause in the employment agreement and noted that, “Our goal was to allow the board to dig into the last contract, update it to make it more appropriate, and for us to think long and hard about how we were structuring the contract in such a way that really pointed to the items we really wanted to get done, highlighting specific tasks.” Contracts like this have become much more commonplace in municipal management and represent an appropriate approach to the work of the chief administrative officer (CAO) of our community.

Employees say contact tracing, communication about close contacts an issue at Falmouth treatment facility

FALMOUTH Several employees of Gosnold Inc. claim that staff at the nonprofit s drug and alcohol detox center on Ter Heun Drive are not properly responding to positive cases of COVID-19 at the facility. The 50-bed Gosnold Treatment Center, an inpatient facility where patients detox for up to six days, has had six staff members and seven patients test positive for the virus between March and January, according to Kevin Ralph, Gosnold’s chief development and external relations officer.  But employees say administrators have not been notifying them of positive cases among staff in a timely manner and have not been properly performing contact tracing. They also say that the center is not being properly sanitized and cleaned during the pandemic.
