The program is made possible by a Healing Illinois grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services. The event will be facilitated by Dr. Jennifer Hernandez, a special ed teacher of 15 years who has primarily taught students with emotional disturbance, mental illness and incarcerated youth in secondary alternative settings. In the last three years of her tenure in special education, she was a special education administrator in the Ferguson-Florissant School District. She was a witness and student advocate in the aftermath of the murder of Michael Brown.

Freeport s Winneshiek Playhouse faces uncertainty with COVID pandemic

Jane Lethlean Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT It has not been easy lately for Winneshiek Playhouse. The last production of “Witness for the Prosecution” was performed a week before the 2020 pandemic shutdown. While the theater remained empty for almost a year, Stacey Sammul, president of the board, said she remains cautiously optimistic for 2021 but isn’t ready to tackle the uncertainty for 2021. “We will be following what is being done on a broad spectrum before we make a definite plan for reopening, she said. The safety of our patrons, actors and volunteers is our first concern.” Sammul estimates the theater lost nearly $10,000 in ticket sales, along with funding received from memberships, ad sales and donations from the community. The board also approved adding improved air circulation in the theatre and stage by having the air ducts professionally cleaned. The board has discussed protocols for when to reopen, with a stringent set of procedures.

YWCA will be hosting thier DiverSTORY Times and CommUNITY Healing Circles. All virtual events are free to the public. DiverSTORY is a session where children and their grownups come together to hear a children’s story about diversity and engage in guided conversations about diversity, inclusion and race. The session will include an interactive learning activity where families practice race-conscious conversations and ask questions of facilitators. The event is set for Saturday, Feb. 20 at 10 a.m. via Zoom.

Students will compete in the contest as individuals or in groups in three age brackets: 11–14, 15–18, and 19–21. Entries are due by Friday, April 30. Three prizes between $500 and $2,000 will be awarded in each category at a red carpet debut to be held at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield on July 31.
