Overcoming adversity CARBONDALE (WSIL) SIU sophomore basketball player Sekou Dembele scored 6 points in a loss to Evansville on Monday. Six points doesn t seem like a big deal but when you realize it s his first conference game in a year, following a gruesome injury, it puts things into perspective. Dembele gave SIU some productive minutes in the second matchup against Evansville. The sophomore forward has only played in 4 of the Salukis 8 games. And he was efficient in his 11 minutes on Monday, finishing with 6 points on 3 of 4 shooting. At 6-7 230 pounds Dembele gives the Salukis another low post option. INDIANAPOLIS (WSIL) At 6-0 SIU men s basketball has everyone talking. Best start since the 2003-04 season. We ll have to wait until next Monday to see if SIU receives any votes for the next AP top 25 poll. With a win at Butler, a place where 59 non conference opponents prior to SIU tried to win but failed, will certainly garner some attention. But before that all takes place, starting Sunday, SIU begins Missouri Valley Conference play with Evansville on back to back days. SIU showed grit and hustle. Great example Kyler Filewich with a deflection, Steven Verplancken diving for a loose ball, Filewich responds with a block and then defends a three. This all happened in the same sequence.
