Take a scenic drive down through the mountains, Blue Ridge to the east and the Great Smokies to the west, to reach Johnson City of East Tennessee. Johnson City oozes Southern charm and has the feel of a city much bigger than its size. If your visit is anything like mine, you will feel a connection right away. Johnson City has so much history (railroad, Civil War, and Revolutionary War) but doesnât get lost in the past. Itâs growing by leaps and bounds and one of the Tri-Cities (along with Bristol and Kingsport). Here is how to spend a perfect day in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Dining out has changed. The days of sharable plates, buffets and communal tables may be gone, at least for now, but the good news is that dining out is still an option. Places like Yee-Haw Brewing Co., Augusta Grill, Hans & Franz Biergarten, Portofino’s Italian Restaurant, and Stella’s Southern Brasserie seized the opportunity to refresh the dining experience with enhanced outdoor spaces and new socially distanced dining.
And while 2020 may have altered the way we go out to dinner, it didn’t stop a number of great new restaurants, like Maestro’s Bistro & Dinner Club and Urban Wren, from opening.

In case you missed it, something hot has been brewing at Yee-Haw Brewing Co. for a good portion of 2020. While it already had a strong following for great craft brews and lots of outdoor fun, the downtown brewpub took time off last year to make a few upgrades, which included an expanded outdoor space with a jumbotron video screen, more games, like ping pong and basketball hoops, as well as new brews through a collaboration with Asheville’s Green Man Brewery.
But what was most notable was a newly formed love connection via a partnership with the legendary Nashville-based Prince’s Hot Chicken, adding tasty chicken with serious new levels of blistering sauce to the menu.
In a press release, the city said contractor equipment will be set up in the area.
Traffic control measures will be in place.
The city said drivers who cannot avoid the area should expect delays, use caution in the construction zone, and observe posted speed limits for their safety and the safety of the workers.
This work is part of the first phase of Johnson Cityâs downtown water and wastewater system improvements project.
Additional information about the project and updates to changes in traffic patterns will be available on the cityâs website at www.johnsoncitytn.org/downtownimprovementsproject.
