One week into ukraine s incursion into russia, the kremlin s forces are scrambling to push back its advance. Extra units have been sent as ukraine now claims to be holding up to 1,000 square kilometres of russian territory. Russian residents in the kursk 0blast are being evacuated as the fighting continues. Around 180,000 civilians have so far been moved, many shocked that russia has been invaded for the first time since the second world war. In ukraine, public morale has been boosted by this unexpected turn of events. In a russian air raid near kyiv, part of a series of attacks targeting six regions of ukraine. Meanwhile further south in the occupied region of zaporizhzhia a fire, at a nuclear plant has now extinguished. The region s kremlin installed governor said there was no spike in radiation before the fire was reportedly put out. Russia blamed a ukrainian drone attack while kyiv accused russian officials who control the plant of starting the fire. Ukraine s nuclear power company said a cooling tower and other equipment were damaged. The un s nuclear agency said there was no reported impact on nuclear safety following the blaze. Streets to counter planned anti immigration protests the police have been warning about. Authorities were preparing for over 100 anti immigration protests but they did not materialise and there was no repeat of the violent disorder which has hit the uk in the last week. This map shows some of the areas where antiracism protesters have been gathering, from newcastle to birmingham, liverpool to brighton, sheffield to london. Apart from some isolated incidents in chatham and aldershot, the marchers have been largely peaceful. In brighton there was a large police presence at a counter protest that spilt out onto one of the main streets in the city. And this wasn t bristol earlier this evening when more 1000 counter protesters gathered. This was the counter protest in liverpool outside a refugee centre.
