Hello, i m lucy hockings, welcome to Bbc News now. Memorial events are taking place in israel and Around The World to mark one year since the attacks of October The 7th, the deadliest day in the nations history. Nearly 1200 people were killed and hundreds more taken hostage when hamas gunmen stormed across the border. In a moment, well go to Southern Israel and our chief international correspondent lyse doucet, who is at kibbutz be eri, where one in ten of the residents were killed by hamas. And to Anna Foster In Beirut, which has seen fresh israeli strikes overnight and into this morning. But first lets turn to todays events. At exactly 6. 29 this morning flags were lowered to Half Mast outside the knesset. That was the time when rockets from gaza started raining down on Southern Israel, followed by the deadly rampage by thousands of hamas led militants on israeli communities, Army Bases and the nova music festival. At the festival site, president Isaac Herzog this morning joined a memorial service. More than 350 people there were murdered there. Meanwhile, the fighting which has raged almost unabated for a year Continues. In lebanon there have been further powerful explosions in southern beirut. It came after israel warned civilians to evacuate densely populated suburbs of the capital which it considers to be Hezbollah Strongholds. Israel has also launched fresh strikes on targets In Gaza overnight. And across the border, Israels Military says its investigating how five rockets fired from Southern Lebanon on Sunday Nightmanaged to penetrate its Air Defences and explode in the northern Port City of haifa. A short time ago hezbollah claimed it had fired a second salvo of rockets over the border. Well be speaking to our correspondents in the region shortly. But first, lets look back at how the events of October The 7th unfolded in israel, a year ago today. At 6 29 am, Southern Israel awoke to the sound of sirens along the gaza border. Only a few moments later, sirens sounded across in Tel Aviv and nearby cities in central israel. At 6 50 am, hamas fighters breached the border fences, entering israeli towns and launching attacks in multiple locations. By 8 04am, the Israeli Army declared a State Of Alert for war, and idf soldiers began deploying to areas under attack. At10 25am, Idf SpokesperSon Daniel hagari announced 0peration swords of iron. Before noon, prime Minister Netanyahu addressed the nation from Tel Aviv, declaring that israel was at war. As fighting Continued in Southern Israel, by 3 41 in the afternoon, Israeli Fighterjets began striking targets withIn Gaza. Now, here we are one year later. Lyse is in Southern Israel. Lyse. You join us now in kibbutz be eri, one of many places in Southern Israel that were attacked by hamas fighters a year ago. Attacked by hamas fighters a yearago. Small attacked by hamas fighters a year ago. Small conductors like this, once a thriving community of about 1000 people, devastated as they celebrated what was their 77th birthday. It is one of the oldest kibbutzim in this part of israel and it is also known for having been the home of israeli peace activists, and now they are left wondering. The pain of what happened on the 7th Of October is still palpable here. You can feel it. Israelis say it is an open wound, most of all until the hostages come from. Around 100 are said to be still In Gaza. Many are feared dead but some still alive and some from this community of kibbutz be eri. We will speak to a survivor of the horrific attacks of hamas in a moment, but lets look at the other stories going on In Gaza, across the border, and also in Southern Lebanon and beirut. We arejoined by Southern Lebanon and beirut. We are joined by a former national Security Adviser of israel. Welcome to Bbc News. Thank you for Havin Welcome to Bbc News. Thank you for having me welcome to Bbc News. Thank you for having me. Im welcome to Bbc News. Thank you for having me. Im sure welcome to Bbc News. Thank you for having me. Im sure you for having me. Im sure you follow all for having me. Im sure you follow all the for having me. Im sure you follow all the twists for having me. Im sure you follow all the twists and follow all the twists and turns. We hear reports from israeli generals who say they believe Israels Military objectives In Gaza have been achieved and now is the time to try to come to a ceasefire to bring the hostages home. If you were still the national Security Adviser, what would you be advising the Prime Minister . Minister . The first advice would be minister . The first advice would be to minister . The first advice would be to Advise Minister . The first advice would be to advise the I Minister . The first advice i would be to advise the Bbc Minister . The first advice would be to advise the bbc not to call the members of hamas fighters but terrorists. We should be clear they are terrorists, not fighters. The second advice is that israel has two different goals In Gaza. 0ne has two different goals In Gaza. One is the historic one, to make sure that hamas will not exist as an organisation In Gaza for eternity. For that, we have to Continue to kill the members of hamas, the terrorists which are part of the organisation, to find all the organisation, to find all the remaining infrastructure elements In Gaza and to destroy them, and to not let hamas or any other organisation renew its capability In Gaza. That at least we need a year to clean gaza totally. The first goal, parallel to the first, but if we have any chance to do it, it should be the priority, and it is to release the hostages. We have to do both, because we cannot allow an organisation like hamas, after what its Terror Wristed on the 7th Of October, to exist in the Middle East or existing gaza. They will not exist In Gaza any more. All of them will killed, and all the infrastructure will be destroyed. Be destroyed. Ive lost the feed. We are having a few problems, it seems, with the sound on the feed. We will return to Southern Israel shortly. I can also direct you to the news website, where we have a live page p website, where we have a live page up and running, just covering all of the events of today, the international reaction, what is happening on the ground in lebanon, gaza and israel. I think we can now return. Apologies to our viewers. We have had some technical issues here. There are a lot of israeli and foreign media here today to observe the vigils taking place here and across israel. We were talking to yacoub, a former national Security Adviser for israel. You were explaining why israel has to Continue to be able to clear gaza of the Military Capabilities of hamas. What do you say to arab states and palestinian leaders who say they will find a way to ensure they will find a way to ensure the security of israel In Gaza if they are allowed to run the territory themselves and it is part of a process that leads to The End of the occupation in The End of the occupation in the beginning of a Palestinian State . I the beginning of a Palestinian State . ~. state . I think that it is Illusion State . I think that it is illusion to state . I think that it is illusion to Think State . I think that it is illusion to think that L State . | think that it is illusion to think that there state . I think that it is illusion to think that there is now, and i emphasise now, any arab Country Orforce now, and i emphasise now, any arab Country Or Force that can enter gaza, Fight Hamas and neutralise its Military Capabilities. This capability does not exist in the arab world, not within Palestinian Society. We have huge experience about it. The only way to achieve what people think should be achieved at The End will be an area In Gaza in which De Radicalisation effort. It is only if israel finishes with hamas and hamas will not threaten. Either palestinian or arab or both or a combination of arab and western countries, i dont mind. What i know for sure, based on long experience, that only the idf can smash hamas to the level in which hamas Cannot Stop The Process that probably, hopefully, will take part in the future in which the Gaza Strip will be disarmed, without any military Capability And De Radicalisation Education will take part and will change the mood and the thinking of those living In Gaza. Because remember, hamas is not an organisation which was imposed from the outside On Gaza. Hamas is an organisation which was elected by the people of the Gaza Strip. It came from within Palestinian Society In Gaza. Sinwar was born In Gaza. To change the situation, you need hamas not to be a threat, so those who would come in and try and change the culture of the society. And that can be done only by israel, only by the idf, and it will take a year to prepare the ground for new forces which will come either from Palestinian Society or from Palestinian Society or from Arab States To Change Gaza dramatically. From Arab States To Change Gaza dramatically dramatically. Yes. I am sorry, we dont dramatically. Yes. I am sorry, we dont have dramatically. Yes. I am sorry, we dont have time dramatically. Yes. I am sorry, we dont have time to dramatically. Yes. I am sorry, we dont have time to go dramatically. Yes. I am sorry, we dont have time to go into| we dont have time to go into all these issues today, but thank you very much for making your views clear on what have to be the next steps In Gaza. Lets return now to the main point of this day, a day of commemoration individuals across israel and indeed Around The World. There was a very sad and sombre vigil here in kibbutz beeri. Most members of the community no longer live here. Most of the houses are now just charred here. Most of the houses are nowjust charred shells. Joining me now is gilad korngold. This is the reaSon, this is the way. Also british want to stop the war In Gaza. Lets do it by releasing the hostages. It is the first thing we have to do to be relaxed in this area. For them, the perSonal worries until all of The Loved Ones in these close knit communities along the border can say that everyone is accounted for in one way or another. The war goes onjust one way or another. The war goes on just across the border, not farfrom goes on just across the border, not far from where we are, In Gaza, a devastating war, but also intensifying by the day. In lebanon, In Beirut and Southern Lebanon. Lets cross to join Anna Foster. Southern lebanon. Lets cross tojoin Anna Foster. It Southern Lebanon. Lets cross to join Anna Foster. It was another night of devastating Air Strikes. Tell us what it is like today. We are only geographically less than 200 miles away from Each Other but as the saying goes, Worlds Apart at the moment. That bold affair so much fighting is going on. Here in the lebanese capital, beirut, it was another night of incredibly fierce israeli Air Strikes on the southern Suburbs Area where hezbollah is based, where many of its senior commanders were based and we now know know that Hezbollahs Leader was dug into the groups headquarters underground, under the building is there. And he was killed just over a week ago here In Beirut. When you see really the impact that had, those attacks on the 7th Of October have had on the wider 0ctober have had on the wider region, you really do see how difficult things are now for many people here. Lets speak to two of my colleagues in different parts of the country now. Nick, to you first, just remind us, because i remember being in that part of Northern Israel in the days after October The 7th, people having to leave their homes when the hezbollah rockets started coming in, and this conflict we are seeing now on the border and into lebanon is a culmination of that, isnt it . It certainly is, anna. If it were needed, a real reminder for people living here today about the daily threat, as they see it, from hezbollah rockets, because once again we had a number of places in the north of israel being targeted and also hit in some cases by the hezbollah rocket fire. The Iron Dome Defence they have got here is sophisticated, advanced, but it does not stop everything. For example, today you have got the city of haifa, israels third city, being hit for the first time directly since 2006, the last war between hezbollah and israel. We were talking to and israel. We were talking to an official from the municipality an officialfrom the municipality earlier an official from the municipality earlier today and he was saying that people are staying in this particular place, but it does underline if not the fear of the anxiety that people have. He said people really need to follow the advice and if there are sirens, which there are quite regularly in this part of the north of the country, they need to follow them and take shelter as quickly as possible. As quickly as possible. Nick, what we are as quickly as possible. Nick, what we are seeing as quickly as possible. Nick, what we are seeing at as quickly as possible. Nick, what we are seeing at the i what we are seeing at the moment, and lena can speak more about this, is decisions being made at the top of organisations, and ultimately the people impacted by those are civilians on all sides. We have seen in Lebanon Today more people being told to flee their homes, notjust In Beirut but in the southern parts. In the southern parts. Yes, anna, in the southern parts. Yes, anna. And in the southern parts. Yes, anna, and it in the southern parts. Yes, anna, and it has in the southern parts. Yes, anna, and it has been in the southern parts. Yes, anna, and it has been a. In the southern parts. Yes, i anna, and it has been a year since anna, and it has been a year since the anna, and it has been a year since the start of these attacks. Hezbollah responded to the attacks On Gaza on the 8th Of October 2023 and started firing of October 2023 and started Firing Rockets into Northern Israel. Firing rockets into Northern Israel, driving the country into israel, driving the country into the israel, driving the country into the status we are in today into the status we are in today. This is a decision made by one today. This is a decision made by one party, one group, and the whole by one party, one group, and the whole country is paying the price the whole country is paying the price. Mainly this year community, the supporters of hezbollah, other ones who are affected~ hezbollah, other ones who are affected. They are the ones who had to affected. They are the ones who had to he affected. They are the ones who had to be evacuated from villages had to be evacuated from villages and towns in Southern Lehanon Villages and towns in Southern Lebanon and they are the ones who keep lebanon and they are the ones who keep receiving warnings to flee the who keep receiving warnings to flee the neighbourhood. Even here flee the neighbourhood. Even here in flee the neighbourhood. Even here in the Hezbollah Stronghold in the south of beirut. Stronghold in the south of beirut, most of these areas are inhabited beirut, most of these areas are inhabited by sheer muslim communities shia. Many we spoke communities shia. Many we spoke to communities shia. Many we spoke to in communities shia. Many we spoke to in the last two weeks have spoke to in the last two weeks have lost spoke to in the last two weeks have lost their homes and had to evacuate, they feel strongly angry to evacuate, they feel strongly angry about the strikes coming from angry about the strikes coming from israel. They see it as disproportionate, as hitting civilian disproportionate, as hitting civilian areas, and in the past few days civilian areas, and in the past few days we have even seen attacks few days we have even seen attacks on health workers, hospitals, medics. Forthe lebanese, although they are paying lebanese, although they are paying the price for a war, they paying the price for a war, they havent had the decision into they havent had the decision into it. They havent had the decision into it, but they are very much angry into it, but they are very much angry at into it, but they are very much angry at israel and its practices in lebanon, very much Angry Practices in lebanon, very much angry At Practices in lebanon, very much angry at the international community who doesnt see Israels Community who doesnt see israels actions in lebanon as viotations israels actions in lebanon as violations of international humanitarian law. Violations of international humanitarian law. And we are seeinu humanitarian law. And we are seeing pictures humanitarian law. And we are seeing pictures of humanitarian law. And we are seeing pictures of southern i seeing pictures of Southern Lebanon, the seaside city of tyre, not so much now and october as things get cooler, but you would normally seek people at the beach, living their lives, and it is very much empty now since the israeli strikes began. As you are in Northern Israel, nick, we know that israeli forces are focusing on the area just across the border, but do we know how much further they are planning to go, particularly with a Ground Operation they have launched here in lebanon . We dont really. About a week ago, the israeli military were talking about these targeted, limited operations, giving the impression they were going just across the border and retreating in some cases, and they said this was following on from clandestinely operations they were carrying out the best part of a year. We dont really know and we dont have a sense of how much ground may have been taken. We know more troops have been called up and they will be on their way to the front line. The idf said today that an 11th Soldier has been killed, a 43 year old, a reservist, reflecting that a lot of people are being called up lot of people are being called up to serve in this particular operation. You were describing the impact of the Air Strikes. Last night and overnight, we heard a huge number of israeli jets overhead, carrying out the strikes. It was one after another, and that does give an indication of what feels like an expansion of this particular operation. An expansion of this particular operation an expansion of this particular 0 eration.. operation. Lena, as we Continue to watch these operation. Lena, as we Continue to watch these pictures operation. Lena, as we Continue to watch these pictures of i operation. Lena, as we Continue to watch these pictures of the l to watch these pictures of the smoke rising, we have been talking as well about the Displacement Crisis in lebanon at the moment, the number of people who had to leave their homes, and the fact that the lebanese state of the moment, having been through crisis after crisis in the last few years, just doesnt have the capability to help everyone right now. Capability to help everyone right now capability to help everyone riahtnow. ~ , , right now. Absolutely, this is a country right now. Absolutely, this is a country already right now. Absolutely, this is a country already struggling l a country already struggling with a country already struggling with its a country already struggling with its economy. It is almost like with its economy. It is almost like a with its economy. It is almost like a failed state, some describe it, and it is corrupt and describe it, and it is corrupt and many describe it, and it is corrupt and many then you have these bil and many then you have these big crisis and many then you have these big crisis coming in. The government says almost 1. 2 million government says almost 1. 2 million are displaced, most of them million are displaced, most of them in million are displaced, most of them in 900 shelters of the government and some un aid Agencies Government and some un aid agencies say the shelters are at fult agencies say the shelters are at full capacity. Those who have at full capacity. Those who have the at full capacity. Those who have the money renting out or going have the money renting out or going further north into the mountains. The problem is that there mountains. The problem is that there is mountains. The problem is that there is no mountains. The problem is that there is No End In Sight for this there is No End In Sight for this crisis there is No End In Sight for this crisis. You need a house, you this crisis. You need a house, you need this crisis. You need a house, you need the hygiene facilities, you need food for these facilities, you need food for these people. The government dont these people. The government dont have the money to support dont have the money to support. Civil society is doing incredibly and supporting Each Other incredibly and supporting Each Other and rushing to provide mattresses and blankets and some mattresses and blankets and some food, but this is not enough some food, but this is not enough. It needs governments and the enough. It needs governments and the international community to step and the international community to step in and the international community to step in and help. We have seen to step in and help. We have seen some aid coming in but it is definitely not up to the need is definitely not up to the need. What is worrying the lebanese here is that these attacks lebanese here is that these attacks by the israeli defense forces attacks by the israeli defense forces are continuing and they are sometimes outside the Hezbollah Strongholds, so the displacement is on the go and on the displacement is on the go and on The Rise and people feel that on The Rise and people feel that there is nowhere safe for them that there is nowhere safe for them to that there is nowhere safe for them to Continue. That there is nowhere safe for them to Continue. Yeah, its a its a them to Continue. Yeah, its a its a normally them to Continue. Yeah, its a its a normally them to Continue. Yeah, its a its a normally its i its a normally its enormously difficult. We will be keeping you up to date with the story, so stay with us on Bbc News. Hello. A mixed Day Today in what will be a fairly mixed week of weather. Showers will be the common element throughout. In the first half of the week, when the sunshines out between the showers, Itll Feel quite mild, but the second half of the week the winds pick up and its going to be a cold wind at that, all due to the presence of an Ex Hurricane. Now at the moment its just this area of low pressure responsible for the showers well see. Weather front is being tangled across the north of scotland so far today. Further Cloud Outbreaks of rain here. But elsewhere that mixture of sunshine and showers. Showers Continue to develop more widely through england and wales during the afternoon, some of which will be heavy and thundery. But therell be places that stay dry. Certainly a brighter afternoon for northern ireland, northern England And North wales. In the sunshine, warm for this stage in october, really. Temperatures mid to high teens. Finish the day, though, with some Heavy Rain in the southwest that will spread northwards across england and wales for a time, into northern ireland. Some clear skies either side of it, so there could be one or two Mist Orfog patches, but the general flow s from the south so it wont be a cold night. Temperatures 8 12 degrees. As we go into tomorrow, though, it could be a damp start, though, over northern england, northern ireland. That rain spreads its way into central southern scotland, and it could become fairly slow moving. Large Rainfall Totals through parts of central eastern scotland. To the north of it a cold breeze developing, but a drier day compared with today. To the south of it, for much of england and wales, sunshine and showers again. If anything, those showers more widespread than today. But in the sunshine between it will feel warm. Now at The End of the week will be governed by this area of cloud. This is hurricane kirk. Its decaying now as it pushes over colder waters, but the area of low pressure that is left will then run it looks like increasingly to the south of us, across parts of continental europe, but it will still have an impact on our weather as it pulls away in drawing down colder, strong winds. Now this is linked to hurricane kirk, Ex Hurricane kirk, which is to the south of us on wednesday. Its still far away, but could be enough to give some persistent rain to the Channel Islands and the far southeast of england. One to watch. But away from it, a fair bit of cloud, occasional showers and turning colder from the north. Now the centre of that Storm System pushes continuing towards denmark as we go through into thursday. And that opens the door to colder air for more of us on thursday, and some particularly strong winds down eastern coasts rough seas and dangerous around some of the coasts, i suspect. But a story of sunshine and showers for many on thursday. But by the afternoon, a much chillierfeel and a frosty night will follow. This is Bbc News, the headlines.
