171 acres of Newport News property disappears due to 'miscalculation'

Over the past week, officials with the City of Newport News have been trying to piece together how it amassed 422 acres of land in Menchville that are now home to the Newport News City Farm and Riverview Farm Park. But now, the city says, it only owns 251 acres there.

'Better with Age': Essays of seniors pursuing passions

“I really wanted to do something where I could keep growing because the stereotype and to a degree the actuality of getting into your 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s and some of your powers are in decline,” Bersson said. “That idea of decline is pretty powerful.” His first night returning to a stage and performing for an audience was nerve-wracking. Gradually, he became familiar and comfortable with the scene and played there every Tuesday evening for the next four years, until the pandemic brought live music to a halt. Curious what other feats of courage and rediscovery his friends and colleagues had ventured and overcome during their later halves of life, Bersson sent an email prompt to which he received nearly 30 responses. Twenty-nine of those voices are shared in “Better With Age.”

Rosenfeld: Northam should address prison virus crisis

Most people behind bars were not sentenced to die, but as COVID-19 continues to move through our prisons, jails and other carceral facilities, more and more that’s a real possibility. The Virginia COVID-19 Justice Coalition — a group of almost 40 advocacy organizations from all across the commonwealth — is calling on Gov. Ralph Northam to address the ongoing crisis in Virginia’s detention facilities before it’s too late. Gov. Northam recently announced that he would take steps to mitigate the spread of the novel coronavirus, declaring that “we can come together as one commonwealth to get this virus under control and save lives.” Virginians behind bars, as well as the staff and community that surround them, must be an equal part of this conversation, with their health and well-being of utmost importance.
