This is one hour 15 minutes. [indistinct chatter] all right, i think we are ready. Good afternoon. Thank you all for being here. I am the director of the Aspen Institute, and it is my pleasure to curate four or five times a year, some of these washington roundtable series, sponsored by michelle smith. We want to thank you, michelle. The conversations i curate naturally deal with the arts, but not just with the arts, but art and society and how the arts intersect and how they can be productive and evermore interactive partners with all of the areas of society, which is very much of course in keeping with the mission of the Aspen Institute itself. Today, we are very happy to welcome dr. David score 10, the new secretary of the smithsonian, who comes to us building on a distinguished career in medicine.
Those scientists in the audience right now who will be inspired by what they hear to study astro biological or perhaps some of the other sciences as well. We appreciate your attendance. I will recognize myself for Opening Statement and Ranking Member as well. As we discover more planets around the stars in our own galaxy, it is natural to wonder if we may finally be on the brink of answering the question, are we alone in the universe . Finding other life in the universe would be the most significant discovery in human history. Scientists estimate that there are 80 billion stars in the milky way galaxy. To date more than 1,700 nearby planets have been found by the earth space telescope. Last month astronomers discovered the first earthlike planet orbiting its star at a distance where liquid water could be present, a condition thought essential to life. Called kepper 186f, its only 10 larger than the earth and about 490 lightyears away. The transiting survey satellite which will launch i
Number of papers published on astrobiology increased 10 times, and the two pick report that cited astrobiology increased 25 times. Astrobiology is a serious subject studied i serious scientists around the world. Reflecting this interest, next september, the library of congress and nasa will hold a twoday astrobiology symposium on what the societal impacts could be of finding microbial, complex, or intelligent life in the universe. Whether life exists on other planets continues to be a matter of debate amongst scientists. Around the world, number of astronomers listen to naturally occurring radio frequencies. They try to filter out the cosmic noise and interference of human made satellites and spacecraft to find anomalies that could be signals from civilizations elsewhere. At the citye array institute of finance by microsoft cofounder paul allen and the telescope in puerto rico are two wellknown locations for conducting radio astronomy searches for life in the universe. Astronomers have
