Discipline like the arts and sciences, the way ben franklin did, the way ada lovelace did and Albert Einstein. We talk about innovations so often, its almost drained of its meaning, and ive always liked to write about real people who are in a situation whether it whether it be after world war ii when you have to create a whole new world order like the world bank and the Marshall Plan or steve jobs who says okay we are now in a digital revolution and have to make it personal. These are people who are able to think different and outofthebox. So i want to try to explore the creative mind and how it works. Host one of the themes in all of your her books seems to be the connection to spirituality. Everybody had written about the leaves believes whatever they did was part of something larger than themselves. I remember sitting with steve jobs at the end of his life and i asked him why did you do what you do, what was the meaning and he said life is like a river. You get to pick things out of
Of women. This event was hosted by the Radcliffe Institute for advanced study at harvard and the john f. Kennedy president ial library. Its about half an hour. Hi. Hi. Its a pleasure to be here today to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the report issued by the president ial commission on the status of women and its an honor to be here not at the Kennedy Library but with the Kennedy Library and with its wonderful volunteers today. Beyond that, for me, its an honor to have a conversation with professor black who really knows so much about my great grandmother Eleanor Roosevelt and can tell us more of the official side of her work for women. For me, i know a little bit more of the personal side. One story id like to share with you just as an anecdote before we get into the conversation is something my aunt told me that as a young girl growing up, grandmere which is what we affectionately call eleanor in our family, took her aside and said to her, its really important that you are involve
Express my thanks to you. Congratulations to the michigan of the east, our university. I come here tonight to say one or two words on this campaign which is now coming in to the last three weeks. On october 13th, john kennedy had his third of four debates with Richard Nixon and then the plan was for him to fly to ann arbor, stay here. This was a hotel, too, among other things. Had rooms for rent. And stay here and then the next morning start on a whistle stop across the state but then word got out in the community that he was going to stay here the night so students started gathering here. He was supposed to get here about 11 00 and instead he got here closer to 2 00 so there are students waiting for three hours just packed in. His plan had been to go in the side door and just sneak in the side door and sleep for the night. Hes already late. He had to get up early in the morning and then hearing that there was a huge crowd, of course, he couldnt do that. And here he is looking at this
Fine literary skills. Its hard to find four or five books from last year that into the moral issues that we engage in. Witthe full disclosure david who isnt here who is attending his daughters graduation tomorrow at the university. I know how much he wanted to be here and how much he enjoyed being a part of the panel. One subject thats very much part of my life now that im at columbia trying to the 300 selfselected graduate schools to turn up every day. Its all the evidence in journalism. And also try to connect one or two thoughts about that. We are journalism situated in reference to public corruption in the country. We are entering into an era in the last five or ten years it seems to me the award is also trying to reflect on and which we require journalism to renew its engagement and the accountability of the politicians to take what would now be increasingly large sums of money from the private interests. The journalism is obviously in the period of the great disruption and change
For while. I want to place, i still dont know where the location was and is taken by people in plain clothes. At the time you dont know who was interrogating you. I realized at a certain point this dvd a half in the car and they need to get rid of it. I made my way to the car. At one point i excuse myself to the bathroom, tried to destroy the dvd by breaking it apart. I dont know if youve ever tried to break apart a dvd but it is quite hard. And so i shoved it down the drain. Went back into the Interrogation Room feeling confident that ive gotten rid of evidence that could possibly keep me there for longer than i wanted to be. And about five minutes later a guy came in about them, comes in with a piece of the dvd in his hand. More with jehane noujaim, director of the square tonight at eight on cspans q a.
