Baer appointed Sheridan Mayor

Baer appointed Sheridan Mayor City Councilor Aaron Baer was appointed Sheridan Mayor at Monday night’s council work session. He succeeds Harry Cooley, who announced his resignation at the Monday, April 19 regular meeting, effective Friday, April 30. He began serving a new two-year term Jan. 1. Cooley and his wife, Elaine, are moving out of the city, so he can no longer serve as an elected city official. The couple is relocating to rural Sheridan, on Gopher Valley Road. Baer was the council president leading up to his mayoral appointment. He was elected to a new four-year term Jan. 1. Councilor Roxie Acuff made the motion to appoint Baer. It was seconded by Sandy Walker. The council voted unanimously to seat Baer.

Sheridan, SW Polk fire districts consolidation efforts come to a halt

Last June, flames ignited at a house on NE Yamhill Street in Sheridan in the early morning hours.  Firefighters from the Sheridan Fire Station were already responding to two other emergency scenes, so calls were routed to the closest districts, including Southwestern Polk County Rural Fire District and West Valley Fire District.  Two volunteer firefighters from Sheridan answered the call. Volunteers and career staff trickled in over the next 20 minutes.  Despite rescue efforts, two people trapped inside the home died. The house was a total loss. Fire Chief Fred Hertel, who oversees the three predominantly volunteer-based districts, tells the story to illustrate what he says is a growing gap between needs and resources an increasing number of calls stretching firefighters beyond their ability to respond in time

January 29, 2021 Sheridan moves to next phase of city manager search The city of Sheridan sent out 14 requests for proposals to secure a contractor to assist with the selection of a new city manager and received six good returns, City Manager Frank Sheridan told the council at this month s regular meeting. Sheridan, whose contract expired Thursday, Jan. 14, will work one more year and retire Feb. 1, 2022. The city used a request for a proposal similar to one used by Carlton, which identified four finalists and is negotiating with its top choice. Jensen Strategies of Portland assisted Carlton with its search at a cost of $24,000.
