Nebraska dioceses to restore Sunday Mass obligation in May

Washington D.C., Jun 11, 2019 / 03:01 am (CNA).- Catholic commentators have welcomed a Vatican document warning that gender theory is a cultural and ideological revolution that undermines both human dignity and the right understandings of sexual difference and complementarity, though the document was not without its critics. “There’s a lot of confusion out there right now in regards to gender theory in education and this document provides much-needed clarity about the truth of the human person,” said Dr. Joan Kingsland, a moral theologian and curriculum advisor for Ruah Woods, an Ohio-based organization focused on St. John Paul II’s Theology of the Body.

California has undergone a sea change on the death penalty

The death penalty runs like a sinuous thread through California politics. The issue bedeviled two governors named Brown, Pat and his son, Jerry, whose Catholic faith weighed heavily on their stewardship of the state’s execution chamber. In 1986, a public outcry resulted in the recall of three Supreme Court justices who repeatedly barred the door and kept the chamber sealed shut. For decades candidates vied to out-tough one another on the issue, even if it required the skills of an acrobat, professing moral opposition to capital punishment while vowing to vigorously enforce the law and ensure that California’s most heinous denizens were sent to their death. (Never mind that executions were rarer than the appearance of major comets.)

Vice presidents often hire ex-staffers to reward them for loyalty and expand their influence. But there s frustration among some ex-Harris staffers who haven t gotten work in the new administration. Kamala Harris former staffers are landing powerful gigs throughout the White House and executive branch, expanding the vice president s network of allies throughout the Biden administration.  Building a big network of trusted confidants in Washington s power corridors has long been important to vice presidents and will be critical for Harris as she looks to exert her influence throughout the administration and potentially prepare for another future White House run of her own.
