To the ninthted circuit november 2, 1985, and served as chief judge from 2007 to 2014, graduating from ucla ,nd from Ucla Law School receiving a jv in 1975 and prior to his appointment to the appellate bench, judge kaczynski served as chief judge of the United States claims court from 1982 to 1985 and special counsel to the merit Systems Protection Board and he retired from the bench in 2017 after 35 years of judicial service. Good morning. The committee will come to order. Without objection the chair is authorized to declare a recess at any time. With that i will recognize myself to give an opening statement. Two days ago the entire world came together to Mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day. In addition, 75 years ago this week, in january 1945, the auschwitz concentration camp was liberated from the nazis. It was one of the most infamous sites of the nazi genocide. More than a Million People were murdered there. The purpose of todays hearing is to commemorate these grave anniversaries to remember those we lost and honor those who are still with us. But it is not enough to sibley recognize these dates. We must also contemplate what led to the atrocities. We must remember the holocaust in order to combat bigotry, hate, and violence of all kind today. I am so pleased to have our distinguished panel here today.
