The Day - Bulkeley Boy Harold Arkava carried the torch for long closed high school - News from southeastern Connecticut

New London  He will always be known as one of the Bulkeley boys. New London native Harold Arkava was many things in his life, but friends say his tenacious efforts to protect and pay homage to his high school alma mater, The Bulkeley School, is likely to be remembered for generations. Arkava died over the weekend at the age of 94. “He was a piece of work. They don’t make em like him anymore,” said longtime friend Joseph Heap, who served with Arkava on the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission in the 1980s and 1990s. Heap reminisced about his friend this week, calling Arkava a funny guy, a bit offbeat, no nonsense and a great storyteller whose tales became more unbelievable with the more cognac he drank.

The Day - Appreciating the loving care provided to nursing home residents - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published December 09. 2020 5:49PM  Regarding the story of the Lawrence + Memorial Auxiliary s Community Outreach Committee, Committee delivering cheer to area nursing home residents, (Dec. 4), I want to relate a heartwarming moment that occurred Thanksgiving afternoon. Mary Rivera, the therapeutic recreation director at Beechwood called me from the room of a resident, Harold Arkava, so that I could speak with him. I can only visit Harold outdoors on the patio of the facility, and now, with the colder weather, only through a window on the ground floor. It was wonderful that Mary took the time on Thanksgiving Day to visit with Harold and other residents and reach out to their relatives and friends so that they could connect.
