The rise of Indian food in the city’s fine dining scene over the last few years has been difficult to ignore, and the latest entrant, Sona, is a brilliant example. NYC has long had a couple of places clustered around East 58th Street offering white tablecloth takes on the cuisine among them Dawat, famously founded in the 80s by actress and acclaimed cookbook author Madhur Jaffrey but our litany of ambitious and higher-priced Indian restaurants has lately grown exponentially.

A harbinger of the current era was Indian Accent, a 2016 New Delhi import that playfully introduced local ingredients into northern Indian recipes, such as pastrami-stuffed kulchas, and curried duck confit topped with foie gras. Gupshup, Rahi, Aroqa, Baar Baar, and Dhamaka followed with similar whimsical menus. Actress and singer Priyanka Chopra Jonas has joined forces with chef Hari Nayak to launch New York’s latest Indian concept, SONA, in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Inspired by Art Deco landmarks located across the globe from Mumbai to Miami designer Melissa Bowers of M.A. Bowers, Inc. crafted a distinctive “Indian Deco” identity for the new concept.
“I envisioned an interior that was timeless not influenced by trends and which would have an aura of the romance and elegance of the Art Deco era,” Bowers says. “Our attention to details created a space that has many layers, and each time you go, you will be guaranteed to have a new experience.”

After a year of takeout, New Yorkers are finally ready to get dressed up for dinner again. And it seems there s no better spot to step out in style than SONA, a new fine dining destination which highlights the flavors and glamour of India.
While there s no question that Manhattan is home to plenty of bucket list-worthy Indian eateries, entrepreneur Maneesh Goyal was driven to present his own take on the culinary experience, inspired by his parents groundbreaking restaurant in Dallas in the 1970s.

More than one year into the coronavirus pandemic, restaurants across the city continue to move forward with openings, sometimes because their concepts could be adapted for takeout and delivery, but more often because their owners saw no other choice but to forge ahead. Since March 16, 2020, when the state first temporarily closed indoor dining, hundreds of new restaurants have opened their doors.
