It was a misty and foggy Monday night in Plymouth, Massachusetts, with an October Nor’easter on the way. Power crews from all over the east coast were lined.
Endangered right whales return to waters off Plymouth

PLYMOUTH – Harbormaster Chad Hunter was testing radios off Manomet Point recently when he received a texted photo of a North American right whale spouting off White Horse Beach.
Right on cue, Hunter turned and saw the telltale spray of one of the endangered creatures as it surfaced for a breath. Another right whale soon surfaced more dramatically, playfully flapping its tail on the water.
“It’s funny. A splash that size definitely draws your attention,” Hunter said.
Between Manomet and Gurnet points, the harbormaster and his crew saw six to eight right whales that day in mid-March. There are more out there, but not a lot more.
