New Delhi: Tens of thousands of people have gathered by the banks of the Ganga in Haridwar for the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, even though India is currently witnessing its most severe COVID-19 outbreak since the pandemic began. Photos and videos from the event show that COVID-19 protocols like physical distancing and wearing masks are not being followed at the event.
As I left my hotel to cover the Kumbh Mela at daybreak, roads had been blocked to traffic to clear the routes. Thousands of devotees could be seen heading to the ghats. When I reached "Har ki Pauri", the most popular ghat, the sight was unbelievable

Haridwar (Uttarakhand) [India], April 1 (ANI): Devotees took a holy dip at the Har Ki Pauri ghat in Haridwar on the first day of Kumbh Mela on Thursday. We have come to Haridwar to attend Kumbh Mela 2021. In 2020 the entire world was affected by a coronavirus. But this year it seems the entire world is here to celebrate this holy event. People are in a very good mood, enjoying themselves and taking holy dips in Ganga, said a devotee.
Devotees are following COVID-19 protocol and while taking the holy dip they are also maintaining social distance.
