Reporter ntsb investigators revealed that only one of two systems were switched off. That apparently created confusion in the cockpit. The pilot responded by disconnecting the autopilot and manually retarding the throttles to idle. Reporter a flight crew member switched back on a switch. Flight level change is a simple way to make a smooth altitude change. Reporter experts told the Investigative Panel it is not recommended to use the flight level change mode during the final descent to the ground as asiana boeing dropped below the level to land safely, the engines continued to idle. An audible alert consistent with low air speed caution was recorded but the action was too late. Reporter several experts would have expected the pilots to take control at that point.
