In 1970, my grandparents packed up their Chicago lives and retired to Newfields, N.H., trading in the beaches of Lake Michigan for the rugged shores of the Atlantic Ocean.
Newfields has a current population of 1,731 and probably in the 70s it hovered at the same or even less. There was a post office, a general store, a local school, and the Catholic church and these features housed in the state motto “Live Free or Die,” and no personal income tax made their decision an easy one.
